There are few things more frustrating than spending $200 – $400 on a glove and then when you get out on the field, the ball is bouncing out because you can’t close it.
We ran into Chad Meske with Mizuno who says his customers can buy their gloves and after 15 minutes of him working on the glove, it will be ready to play. As you will see, he works hard but the people who bought the gloves on the spot we’re satisfied.

Maybe you don’t believe in a jinx, karma, hexes or other supernatural unexplained phenomenon that may guide the rules of the earth.
But here’s something we can all agree on. You don’t say “Gee, we haven’t had very many injuries this season,” Before a big tournament. Why? Maybe it was just coincidence that two players mysteriously get hurt after uttering such a statement… hypothetically.
So here are the Top Ten things Not to say before a National Championship
1. We haven’t had many injuries this season.
2. Our bats are hot.
3. We’ve never given up a no hitter.
4. Our pitchers hardly ever give up home runs.
5. My kid never gets sick / injured.
6. We’ll be fine with 11 players.
7. It’s Southern California. How hot can it be?
8. We’ve cut down the errors to a minimum.
9. My daughter has a 15 game hitting streak.
10. I’m so glad there’s no drama on this team!
Please feel free to add any other sentences that should not be stated before a big tournament.
These parents. You know them. They’re everywhere.
There’s nothing magical about being a big bully, beating up on other kids.
It happens every year in recreational leagues around the country. Someone gets the idea that it would be great if many of the All-Star Players played on one recreational team.
It would be so much fun to have all this talent on one team to dominate the league and win the regular season championship!
And there are loads of excuses too: “They’re good friends”. “They need to carpool together”. “They won’t have fun if these kids don’t play together “.
But the true motive is the same. These parents/coaches want to win every game by a lot of runs.
Here are some reasons why this is a bad idea:
1. It destroys the morale of every other team in the division. There’s nothing like running into that team that has 2 great pitchers, a great catcher, a tight infield and strong hitters to make at least one 10U team cry. Does the game look like a track meet?
2. Young players are more likely to leave the league or less likely to join after hearing about how the board allowed this to happen.
3. More skilled and developed players inspire others to work hard and play better. Playing alongside a teammate that has more experience might be the most effective way of teaching and training. Even professional and collegiate athletes benefit from having veterans around.
4. It’s a great chance for better players to learn leadership. Teams can have vocal leaders on the field. This is their chance to be that voice of confidence directing teammates as a captain.
5. The whole idea of recreational sports is to bring a community together by meeting new people, playing with new players, meeting new parents and learning to work together. Don’t prevent families from building new friendships.
6. Breaking up all-star players into different teams allows them to grow and play in different positions instead of being locked into the same one all year round. In 8U, 10U and 12U, they can still explore and try new spots on defense. Maybe a new team needs a short stop, or the corner infield positions. Maybe catcher or pitcher. This allows young players the ability to try something new and decide whether they like it or hate it.
7. All-Star players can use a break from each other and their coaches. Give the all-stars a chance to miss playing with each other. The chemistry and camaraderie will be even better once the All-Star season begins.
8. You’re not really going to leave and form your own travel team. That’s a lot more hassle and driving that you ever wanted. And if you wanted to play travel, you’d be there already.
9. It really doesn’t feel that good beating every team by a 10-run margin and finishing the Rec season undefeated. There’s nothing magical about being a big bully, beating up on other kids.
10. Grow up
Maybe people won’t look at you like you’re crazy when you tell them about the time, dedication and money that you spend playing, competing, training, working, day-in and day-out.
I was shocked by how much money people were willing to pay to get their kids into some of these universities. $250,000 here, $500,000 there. Most people I speak to about the college admissions scandal are disgusted with how these people tried to use their money and power to manipulate the system.
But then it hit me. These are the extraordinary amounts of cash and elaborate schemes just to get what high-level athletes have. The consultants and their parents (allegedly) bribed college coaches and paid people to create fake athlete profiles for their children to gain a backdoor entry into schools.
People are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to get what great athletes have. Let that sink in for a little bit… Parents are willing to throw six-figures to get what you have. Maybe people won’t look at you like you’re crazy when you tell them about the time, dedication and money that you spend playing, competing, training, working, day-in and day-out.
Scholarships are the dream, but look at how valuable admission to good universities can be. Earning a roster spot can grant you an extraordinary opportunity for an education at a school with a good name. There’s a chance to learn, get trained for a career, make great friends and join a family of alumni who can help you with your future career. And for schools with strong alumni networks, that does happen.
These parents seemed to have plenty of money and they may have wanted nothing more than bragging rights and parties of the rich and famous. These kids would probably get by living off mommy and daddy’s money. But don’t take for granted the power and value of a student-athlete with the chance to EARN their spot at a university.

Cathedral City, CA – You wouldn’t be wrong to say that you saw great softball at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic over the weekend. Watching some of the best NCAA teams the country like UCLA, Oklahoma, Kentucky was amazing. Athletes were making extraordinary plays all over the field.
No one would be surprised if your jaw dropped watching Monica Abbott throw pitches at blinding speed. Or that the professional players for the Scrapyard Dogs and Team Japan were so strong and skilled as they develop even more after college.
But the greatest thing about the tournament happened outside the foul lines. I sat there and watched families cheering on their daughters, granddaughters or nieces. They waited eagerly after the games to give them hugs and tell them how proud they were. The young ladies were off to college and times like these with family were cherished moments.
Parents chatted with their daughters’ old teammates. Old teammates who had gone to different schools were catching up. Parents chatted with parents and coaches they knew from softball teams gone by.
It was slow getting from one game to the other because you would see people you knew, or be introduced to new friends. Or maybe you were just reminiscing about how these girls had grown from being t-ball players to collegiate or potential collegiate athletes.
Yes, the games were amazing and the competition was fierce. But the massive gathering of softball families and friends was a heart-warming feeling. This sport brings people together and helps them build bonds that last a lifetime. Can’t wait to see it again next year.

With utter dismay I’ve been following President Obama’s unconscionable usurpation of limitless executive power with regards to the War in Libya. And let us clear: The bombing of Libyan ground targets, the arming of rebels, and CIA presence on Libyan soil (in an advisory capacity, so they say) all represent aggressive acts of war. This is a third war we have now embarked upon in a Muslim country. Absurdly, once again, American missiles are being fired at a country that poses absolutely zero threat to our national security. And this time our Commander in Chief has committed us to war by executive fiat. No congressional approval. No meaningful debate. Not even a symbolic vote by the legislature to at least give the pretense of abiding by the dictates of Article I of the US Constitution. Everything this man campaigned on—- hope and change, the dawn of a post-partisan era, the end of the Imperial Presidency—–all a complete fraud.
I’m no foreign policy guru. I’m not there in the Situation Room. I don’t presume to think that my feelings wouldn’t be different if I had access to all the relevant information that the national security council has. But such a monumental decision cannot be contingent on personal feelings. It’s one thing to help avert a potential slaughter, such as at Benghazi (although such rationale appears to be somewhat arbitrary; otherwise why aren’t there bombs raining down in the Ivory Coast, Yemen and Bahrain?) It’s quite another to unilaterally assert the right to bomb the bejeesus out of a foreign land. We are not a nation of Great Benevolent Men. We are rather a nation of laws. Believe it or not, even the President of the United States must abide.
I see parallels in this current military overreach with what is happening in healthcare. We spend 30% of a person’s lifetime Medicare outlays on care provided during the last year of his or her life. We spent $50 billion of Medicare dollars last year on dying patients’ last two months of life. Why are we doing this? Why has that 30% number remained unchanged for almost 30 years? Why do I continue to see consults on demented 89 year olds in the ICU who are intubated and unresponsive and suffering from multiple organ failure? And they linger for days and days. And the chart contains consults from numerous highly trained specialists, all dutifully offering the best that American health care can provide.
Is it greed? In our procedure-oriented, profit-driven health care culture, you eat what you kill. Why spend an hour doing a thorough history and physical examination, talking with family members and concluding that no further treatment is warranted when you can send your PA to do a quick consult, sign her note, and schedule the patient for a lucrative procedure the next day. Are we in Libyan merely to protect Italian oil interests? Are we there just to safeguard British Petroleum investments? Or is it truly a “humanitarian” venture?
